2024 Summer Research Institute

2024 Summer Research Institute

In this program, we explored the theme of “Awakening Compassion in Times of Division: Breaking and Coming Together.” Led by our esteemed faculty, we explored the meaning of compassion, how to cultivate compassion for self and others, the barriers to doing so, and how compassion is being used to address current challenges. As you enjoy the 2024 SRI recordings, ask yourself: what would the world look like if we were to nurture compassion—from the inside out—in service of the common good and a world that embraces all?

Choose Compassion: Why It Matters and How It Works

James Kirby will cover four major themes that have been at the core of my research over the last 10 years, which include: 1) what is compassion – unpacking what it entails and how it can be directed towards others, towards the self, and how we can receive compassion from others; 2) the importance of family and how parenting matters in the development of compassion; 3) I will then pivot to how compassion is good for our mental health and wellbeing; and 4) review intervention programs that have been developed to cultivate compassion to help with mental health, social relationships and moral expansiveness.
