Since 2004, the Mind & Life Institute has funded transformative research exploring the intersection of contemplative practices and modern science. Our work and grant programs support interdisciplinary research projects that deepen understanding of the human mind while fostering well-being and reducing suffering.
We are pleased to announce the creation of the Laurisa S. Dill Legacy Award, a $25,000 annual grant established by Laurisa’s family to honor her life and passion for mindfulness education and contemplative research. The award will fund one contemplative research project each year, continuing Laurisa’s commitment to advancing mental health, community well-being, and scientific inquiry.
“She was fascinated by everything. She wanted to know why things
were the way they were, how they worked,
and how they could be improved.”
Laurisa was a lifelong learner with a deep curiosity about our inner and outer worlds—from the impact of mindfulness and meditation on the brain and body to the ins and outs of home renovation and construction projects. “She was fascinated by everything,” says her husband, Jim. “She wanted to know why things were the way they were, how they worked, and how they could be improved.”
Passionate about inspiring growth and change in people, Laurisa dedicated her career to teaching mindfulness and contemplative practices. She was the director of the Mindfulness Clinic in Toronto, where she expanded operations and elevated its recognition in the community. She also worked as a mental health counselor and mindfulness educator, always striving to deepen understanding of the human mind and how contemplative practices could enhance mental health and flourishing. Laurisa’s dedication to her work earned her deep respect from her colleagues and lasting gratitude from her students and clients.
Laurisa championed the benefits of physical and mental wellness, inspiring others to prioritize their well-being. From teaching yoga and mindfulness to running marathons and delivering food for Toronto’s Bike Brigade, her life was a testament to the power of movement, compassion, and connection. Committed to wellness and community, Laurisa always found ways to stay active and serve others.
“She was a giver,” Jim says. “Laurisa was always there to help, whether it was delivering food to those in need or stopping to talk to someone on the street and offering them kindness and support. She truly believed in making the world a better place.”
The Laurisa S. Dill Legacy Award reflects this ethos, supporting research that explores contemplative practices as tools for fostering well-being and flourishing. Recent Mind & Life grantees have studied topics such as mindfulness-based strategies to address burnout among healthcare workers and the role of contemplative practices in enhancing connection with nature. This aligns with Laurisa’s vision of improving individual mental health and strengthening communities.
“Laurisa touched countless lives through her work and her spirit,” adds Jim. “This grant will ensure her legacy continues by supporting research that embodies her values of curiosity, compassion, and service to others.”

Mind & Life is grateful to partner with Laurisa’s family in honoring her memory. Through this annual award, Laurisa’s passion for mindfulness and contemplative science will inspire researchers and benefit communities for generations to come.
Thank you to the Dill family for their generosity and dedication to advancing this vital work. Laurisa’s legacy is a reminder that curiosity and compassion can change the world—one step at a time.
