The aim of this project is to extend my previous work on nonattachment by assessing its role in group identity and memory of historical injustices. I will assess individual differences in nonattachment in the general American population and test the effect of nonattachment on (1) previously known effects of group identity on biases in memory of the history of one’s group, and (2) empathic responses to reminders of historical injustices involving that group. The project will make a unique and significant contribution to theory and research on group identity, memory, and social justice. It will also help establish the ecological validity and experiment-based construct validity of my new measure of nonattachment.
